PSD scholarship-Part 1

Everyone wants a scholarship nowadays. It's a great achievement i must admit. People are beginning the realise what education could really offer. I've personally spoke to the current group of senior citizens the purpose of education. Here's the reply i obtained.

" Education is a nothing, but it is for the sake of pride. I could afford to feed 7 kids of mine without much education. After all, what is education if it doesn't feed you?

Very true, but i would say it was the situation that acted out as the deterrent factor. Many didn't see that shimmer of hope by educating their offspring. The life then was different.A typical example could taken from an Indian family in 1920s living in a rubber estate in Malaysia. The most unfortunate thing would be to be born as a female. This would sure mean "Cursed"one. She would be given the least focus, what more education?Thank god, some managed to squeeze this from this discrimination by sheering relentless effort. However, the faith of others is a mystery that remains buried under the dust. Some men who graduated were absorbed into local administrative office. Some whereas were given "Living" knowledge. (For example, The British Policy was to create a better farmer then present generation heralded by the father).

Things have seen various improvement ever since. The progress and the realisation of students on education has eventually led to the current scholarship madness.Every capable student is vying for the prestigious Public Service Deparment Scholarship. I have absolutely no intentions to mock these students. However please note the following points carefully.

1) Oppression
The current PSD system does not give much emphasise on the family background. If so, a very small fraction of the calculation is allocated for this. Just like a famous Marxism quote-The rich gets richer, the poor get poorer, i've seen many students who could afford education given this scholarship. Heck, what would be the point then? If you could afford education, why bother applying in the first place? Aren't you oppressing the rights of the under-privileged ones? Many students who could afford education obtain extra coaching from various tuition teachers ,alas, achieve those As. On contarary, the unfortunate ones toil every day to achieve the target.Does that make you better? Take a moment and ponder.

2) Betrayal
There was a case reported by The Malaysian media about some 44 medical students in Ireland under the PSD sponsorship who breached the contract. My heart sank upon hearing such. How could this supposedly top students who were given about RM 1 million worth of scholarship break the bond?Do we see patriotism in these traitors? They are drawn into this psychic force called luxury which eventually made them to place the country that spend on them, second.I could definately place my bet that these group are the ones who could actually afford education. However,it is safe for me to say that this wouldn't happen if it was given to a student who knows what hardship is all about. The thing is many students like the latter realise the importance of serving the nation. Others just tend to take things lightly.

So, you have to make a just decision. If a scholarship is want you are looking for, please come back and serve the nation.Do not place your seek for hedonistic pursuit of material take away your urge to serve your nation. It is by far, a temporary impetus. Sooner or later, you are bound to regret.

Human and Bondings

Since it's Mother's day, i would like to make this post meaningful. This post-i trully hope would evoke your inner senses and judgement on the world that we live today. We need to thank for the peace that we have- and- Be grateful of what you have, not to sow the seed of rivalry among humans. After all, i see life as an experience- learning from experience is what generates wisdom. The below captions are real life incidents taken by award winning Pulitzer photographers. Look and judge for yourself-Aren't you lucky?

This is what some mothers might have gone through before we were born. She sacrificed herself to give you a taste of life. It is the joy of you being born that gave her life.

Pic:Deanne Fitzmaurice,2006

A hug from a mother who cares for souls she raised. Its not a mere hug-Its compassion that makes the difference.Thank God because we live with our mothers- She is your torch, your guidance, your destiny.

Pic: Kevin Carter,March 1 1993

Yet, some might not be unfortunate like us.A house to live, friends, and a mother who feeds us restlessly. Look and feel the agony of this toddler here. The vulture is waiting patiently to feed on her meat, yes, raw innocent meat of child who never tasted good, hearty meal in her life. Could life be more cruel then this?

The story of this caption: In March 1993 Carter made a trip to southern Sudan with intentions of documenting the local rebel movement. However, upon arriving and witnessing the horror of the famine crises Carter began to take photographs of starving victims. The sound of soft, high-pitched whimpering near the village of Ayod attracted Carter to a young emaciated Sudanese toddler. The girl had stopped to rest while struggling to a feeding center, wherein a seemingly well-fed vulture had landed nearby. (wikipedia.org,2005)

Kevin Carter died due to depression ( of his own work) after 3 months

And yes, we have war, natural disasters which happens. But first, learn that there's no more bigger gift then having someone who could care for you. Thank you......To all ladies out there, Happy Mother's Day

Vegetarianism

Verse 251-How can he practice true compassionWho eats the flesh of an animal to fatten his own flesh?

Verse 252-Riches cannot be found in the hands of the thriftless, Nor can compassion be found in the hearts of those who eat meat.

Verse 253-Goodness is never one with the minds of these two:One who wields a weapon and one who feasts on a creatures' flesh.

Verse 254-If you ask, "What is kindness and what is unkind?"It is not killing and killing. Thus, eating flesh is never virtuous.

Verse 255-Life is perpetuated by not eating meat. The clenched jaws of hell hold those who do.

Verse 256-If the world did not purchase and consume meat,There would be none to slaughter and offer meat for sale.

Verse 257-When a man realizes that meat is the butchered fleshOf another creature, he must abstain from eating it.

Verse 258-Perceptive souls who have abandoned passionWill not feed on flesh abandoned by life.
Verse 259-Greater then a thousand ghee offerings consumed in sacrificial fires Do not do sacrifice and consume any living creature.

Verse 260-All that lives will press palms together in prayerful adorationOf those who refuse to slaughter and savor meat.

These verses were taken from Holy Kural, an ancient literature to describe vegetarianisme. In India, some 30 % of its population are vegetarians. As for the west, a steady growth of ovu-vegetarianisme have been observed. There are many reasons to point out on why people become vegetarians. One popular reason is due the faith held by the respective party. In hinduisme the type of diet is said to describe the nature of person helds. A vegetarian diet consisting of fruits and vegetables is to have a better potential as self-cleansing material. It leads to clean thinking and eventually sets the path towards Ahimsa( Total Non Violence).

Homo Erectus and Charles Darwin

Getting into science perspective, Charles Darwin, the great observer stipulated that " Men involved from apes" in his work The Origin of Species. My point here, if men really evolved from apes, shouldn t it only involve the diet? If you observe the modern day monkey, most monkeys do not consume meat as their primary food source. The primatologist Jane Goodall established more than 20 years ago that wild chimpanzees kill other animals once in a while and eat the meat with relish( Note that exception exist). In fact, the truth here is that human's diet is trained to accept a vegetarian or semi-vegetarian diet. Why?? See Below.

1)The intestinal length of carnivores (meat-eating animals) is three times the body length to allow for quick removal of flesh wastes that putrefy in the intestines. Man's intestine length, like other herbivores, is six times his body length and is designed for digesting vegetables, grains, and fruits." ( Vegetarian magazine,1990)

2)The way in which predators and plant eating mammals drink is another reason that is suggested. Predators like dogs, cats or lions use their tongue to drink water as digesting meat does not consume as much water compared with digesting vegetables. Plant-eating animals like horses, deer or sheep, suck water as do humans ( Wikipedia.org, 2005)

3)Psychological factor-why do ony humans cook the meat? Now, would you feed a dead cat when you have the opportunity to eat fresh green apples?? ( Douglas Dunn)

Its a very subjective issue....You choose what feeds your need. But don t come and say to me that you are more manly or braver then me if your meal consist of meat and stuff. Respect everyone.I m flexitarian....I eat mostly vegetables and avoid red meat...

Discrimination

Could human understand what "harmony" means? Is it possible to cultivate the essence of peace.Let not social, political nor educationals settings separate us. Every human is equal-A noble concept that i was thought since a very young age. Note that it may sound dystopic to certain set of mind who call themself "intellects",but let's just be nice.

Discrimination in Detail (Source:Thekaekara,M.M ,2005)-INDIA

In India, Brahmins, who are 3.5 per cent of the population, hold 78 per cent of the judicial positions and approximately 50 per cent of parliamentary seats.

Mass rapes often form part of the tactics of intimidation used by upper-caste gangs against lower castes. The Home Ministry reported that, between 2000 and 2001, there was a 16.5 per cent increase in reported rape cases.

Each year, inter-caste violence claims hundreds of lives; in 2001 it was especially pronounced in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.

In India, among the millions of bonded labourers (estimates range widely between 20 to 65 million for 2001), the Government found 85 per cent to be Dalits or from lower castes. These included a large number of children.

Dalits and adivasis (indigenous peoples) form the largest proportion of those who drop out of school. In rural areas, between the ages of five and nine, 36.1 per cent of Dalit boys and 48.4 per cent of Dalit girls dropped out.

About 75 per cent of Dalit communities live below the poverty line.

Two-thirds of the Dalit population is illiterate.

Half are landless agricultural labourers.

Only 7 per cent have access to safe drinking water, electricity and toilets.

Discrimination is a social manifest of power-Its like saying an ancient spiritual verse " The Mind Gets Full with Knowledge, the heart becomes empty". It is a well known fact that Human are drawn to this "looking down" attitude due to several triggers-Power, Skin Colour and Hierchacy. But we fail to realize that GOD itself is LOVE. Opression, Slavery and even know nuclear wars are forms of serious discrimination faced by us. Yet, it is the very same people who did such inane acts tend to indulge themselves in religious affairs-A hope that GOD would shower blessings upon them. My point here-Do you really think so? I shall leave that as an unanswered query

To be continued........

Mirror Of Realism

Idealism without realism is impotent. Realism without idealism is immoral
Richard Nixon
We are bound to dream about our greatest inspiration. Ever wondered what might be our greatest inspiration in this journey that we are heralding today? As for me, inspiration is a "holy" term. It gives me an inner strength to face the masks that people wear.A glimmer of hope to walk by my own. Realism is very rare find for me,indeed-Sadly,people perceive us by the way we look, not by the way we act or talk. I do comprehend the fact that its just a physical manifest-But it ultimately needs the complexity of the mind to generate actions,manouvers-you name it. Yet, people still go for looks-Oh Lord, may you be my savior!!!
I believe i can t go for a change or revolution. But i believe i m a human with feelings too. Too all teenagers out there who are reading this, strive your thoughts and think before you commit. We only have limited options that would ultimately decide the path.Looks may be deceiving.
Thank You

Developing Nation

Let's have a reality check on Malaysia to study the viability of The vision 2020. We shall look into the Environment and educational sector as 2 significant indicator eventhough there are many sectors than can be vastly studied for this standing case.

The Environment
"The most important trade and environment problems in least developed countries (LDCs) are: deforestation, desertification, degradation of coastal areas, overfishing, loss of wildlife and other biodiversity resources, land degradation, and the dumping (by other countries) of wastes, environmentally harmful products and obsolete technologies"

Source: UNCTAD,1998

We are increasingly getting popular in the Western side of the world for being "The Ambitious" one- ie World tallest skycrapper,Longest bridge. However, least concern is given into the green world-i would say. I never get to see a nice, lush, green side in the area i was raised througout my 18 years of living. Yes, there are some green patches-here and there, but i think mother nature is a great inspiration for us.Men today tend to forget the past easily, albeit the universal truth lies on the fact that men turn on the nature to seek hope when his life tends to slip from realms. Unfortunately, it is the same trees and plants we are killing everyday to pave way towards modernization. My personal conviction on this point here- Nature and men should always seek shoulders at all times.Vision 2020 should place a very high importance on this point.

The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature.

Education
Education is the key to success to any nation. Any nation with a solid ground on educational settings would succeed in any proceedings held. However, this is a serious agenda that needs delicate care. Any mishandling or misjudgement would definately see a catastrophic impact on every scale that is involved-be it on economy or the political balance. In Malaysia, students are subjected to 10 years of education- with 2 years of additional pre-U called STPM or the Malaysian Higher certificate of Education. However, many students tend to opt out the latter because it does not appeal their senses. The very same case also for me because i did not study STPM as i opted for the South Australian Matriculation. I rarely see any effort to commerlise nor popularize this pre-U. In fact, even our very own education Minister send his daughter to Trinity college,Melbourne to pursue her foundation. My question here-Is the a bleak in the system? I would not turn this into a political satire- but some questions needs some serious answers.

The recet fall of two of the Malaysia's top universities in the THES ranking-University of Malaya(from 89 to 169) and The Science University of Malaysia(from 111 to unranked) is a testamony of the above system. Yes, efforts have been taken to drastically moniter the changes, the syllabus and the campus, however my opinion is that we need to get into the core issue or the suject-which is undeniably the students. I see many local graduates come with a simple ambition-To graduate that is. Yes, blame it on their family conditions or the lack of exposure-but the things is If one decides to think like an average joe, then they shall remain average for their rest of their life. Don t blame it on faith- It's like a weak response given by 6 th grader who lost his notebook.

Real education must ultimately be limited to men who insist on knowing–the rest is mere sheep-herding
Ezra Loomis Pound (1885-1972) U.S. poet

Poor Treatment?

Star: KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian doctors working in Britain are losing out in terms of promotions and job opportunities to their European colleagues. Prof Dr Lokman Sain, the dean of the medical faculty of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) said he recently visited Ireland and found many Malaysian doctors there stuck as junior housemen and denied promotions as priority was given to European Union doctors. “Many of our doctors have been sent to the smaller peripheral hospitals as they couldn’t get into the major hospitals in Dublin and Cork,” he said. “And even at those hospitals, many are just doing junior housemen’s work which limits the amount of expertise and experience they get. “I feel very upset because recent reports give the impression that doctors do not want to return to Malaysia because of the poor conditions here,” he added, referring to the preliminary report submitted by the UK Executive Council for Malaysian Students. The report focused largely on why medical students, in particular, were not returning to work in Malaysia, citing reasons such as lower income, poorer working conditions, longer working hours, less-structured training programmes and lower chances of promotion. “I have worked in Scotland and I can definitely say that Malaysians have more opportunities for training and promotion here; plus our standards here are on par with Britain, if not better. “The information is misleading as some people will think that it is easier to become specialists in Britain but it is indisputable that we produce more specialists – about 400 specialists a year from UKM, Universiti Malaya and Universiti Sains Malaysia, compared to the 50 or so who come back from Britain every year,” he said.Prof Lokman said the only reason why Malaysians wanted to remain in Britain was because they could earn more money there and therefore people should not blame the Government or the system. “In fact, the foreign examiners who come to our hospitals have always said that our standards are high and our medical schools are of international standing as they are accredited by the Malaysian Medical Council according to international standards. “I think that the people who wrote the report are misinformed. They have not been in touch with the doctors and the medical community,” he said. However, a houseman here who declined to be named, said there were many areas in local hospitals which needed vast improvements to woo back those working overseas. “For example, yesterday I was forced to work for close to 36 consecutive hours, with only 15-minute breaks for meals,” he said. “I believe the situation in Britain is different as there are labour laws on the maximum number of hours one is allowed to work consecutively. “We feel that the Health Minister (Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek), would be the key person to alleviate these problems, as the changes he’s made so far have already caused positive responses,” he added

Well, friends the bad time for us has just arrived. By the way, a law have been imposed against doctors who are wanting to practice in UK. Check out this article for further information. I ll write a follow-up on this matter as soon as possible -but note this came after a publication on the Sunday Star on why most UK-educated doctors from Malaysia refuse to come back and practice

Cheers

Medical School Recognition

I've done my research on the list of medical schools recognized by The Malaysian government. A follow-up analysis with soon come up to explain the possiblities,JPA styling and the oversaturation-fear. I m in a deep scare right now-I just hope i could practice by the time my fellow mates and i graduate. The number in the bracket detonates the number of medical school recognized by the malaysian government. The source is obtained from The Malaysian Medical Council which deals with the process involved.
